FAMU Campus Traditions

At Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, our spirit carries legacy. It connects our past to our present, our present to our future, and us to each other. Learn how this legacy is kept alive in the traditions that unite us.

Our Mascot: The Rattler

The history of the Rattler runs deep. In 1891, when our school was relocated to Highwood Plantation, the rural landscape was home to an abundance of wildlife, especially rattlesnakes. Their tenacity to strike —  and strike and strike again — embodies the resilience and grit inside of FAMU students.
