About Efferson Student Union & Activities

The Efferson Student Union and Activities Staff is dedicated to improving the quality of campus life for all Florida A&M University students.  We achieve this by providing quality programs and activities that allow students to develop as individuals and find their place in the larger campus and world communities.

Role of the College Union

The college union advances a sense of community, unifying the institution by embracing the diversity of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. We bolster the educational mission of the institution and the development of students as lifelong learners by delivering an array of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs, services, and facilities.

By any form or name, we serve as the heart of the campus community and create a welcoming environment by:

  • Operating as a student-centered organization that engages in shared decision making and holistic development through employment and involvement.
  • Advocating for inclusivity and equity, fostering respect, and affirming the identities of all individuals.
  • Educating students in leadership and social responsibility and offering firsthand experiences in global citizenship.
  • Providing gathering spaces to encourage formal and informal community interactions that build meaningful relationships.

Traditionally considered the living room, the college union enhances the student experience and cultivates an enduring connection to the institution.

Donate to ESUA

A gift to Efferson Student Union and Activities is used to enhance university programs that are not fully funded by the state legislature; it is also your opportunity to support the students of Florida A&M University by providing accessible dollars to meet their most important needs. By donating to Efferson Student Union and Activities you will make it possible for us to provide educational, recreational, diversity and leadership programs that can enhance the educational experience of students.

Efferson History

The student union is named after H. Manning Efferson. Efferson was a native of South Carolina who earned a master's degree from Columbia and came to FAMU as a math instructor in 1924. Efferson went on to serve as head of the math department, dean of liberal arts and dean of students before being tapped as interim president from July 1949 to April 1950, between the presidencies of William Gray and George Gore. Efferson retired from FAMU in the early 1960s and died in 1972; FAMU named its student union building for him in 1975.
